As we repeatedly state, someone with high self-awareness, among other positive traits, understands their abilities and weaknesses, are excellent communicators and develop strong relationships. I’d like to tell you about a good friend who is a perfect example of someone who has developed strong self-awareness in the past several years and how dramatically they have benefited from it.

This is the story of a positive, hard-working, respectable woman, married with two children, holding down a good job, but wasn’t as happy as she wanted. She had HappyMomdeveloped a chronic condition that sapped her energy, she bickered with her husband more than she liked, she couldn’t spend the time with her children as she wanted, and had a job that wasn’t interesting or challenging. There was nothing seriously wrong, yet she felt let down a little about how things were going in her life.

We were talking occasionally about the benefits of coaching around self-awareness development, and I suggested she work with me periodically to develop her own self-awareness to a greater degree. After expressing some initial reluctance to share her insecurities and private disappointments, we made exceptional progress in clearing her self-doubts and opening her to the realization of her exceptional gifts. I’ve seldom known anyone who so completely committed themselves to the open exploration of their greater authentic self as she has.

Through our work together she proved to herself how truly talented, capable, creative and loveable she was as a spouse, mom, employee and consultant.

MarriageIn the past four years virtually every area of her life has blossomed remarkably. Her relationship with her spouse has grown much closer with little squabbling. Her health has improved to the point of needing no medications. She has been able to carve out meaningful time with her children. Most of all, she left her old job filled with drudgery to create a thriving business allowing her to do what she loves every day.

She mentioned last week, whenever her friends are complaining about how life is hard and unfulfilling, she admits she keeps to herself, because her life is so satisfying and easy. She can’t remember a time when she has been so happy.

None of this came about by accident. As she began to catalog and live by her values, set meaningful goals and standards by which she lived her life, and shed so many worries and doubts about herself and others, her life turned strongly in the direction of joy and success. It continues to this day.

Her transformation seems almost too simple and effortless, doesn’t it? We have learned LovingLifewhen we begin to life a fully authentic life, one in tune with our values and beliefs, while setting goals and outcomes that are fully aligned with who we are and want to become, life opens unexpectedly. I am so thrilled for the great woman and her family. This type of personal transformation is available just as easily for all of us.
