During this current time of challenge we are hearing from many sources how to take care of ourselves most effectively: Stay home as much as possible and avoid close contact with others as much as possible, wash our hands frequently and avoid touching our face, etc. All excellent recommendations.

There are numerous other things happening that are of powerful benefit to our communities as well, and happily, many of these events are being shared on social media. There are far too many of these happenings to list, but here are a few:

  1. Many food outlets are providing special opportunities for at risk-seniors to receive need services with as little inconvenience and danger as possible.
  2. Municipalities are providing free buses or idle school buses to students so they have access to Wi-Fi to continue learning opportunities while schools are closed.
  3. Teachers are delivering school computers to homes of students so they can participate in e-learning with their classmates from home.
  4. Entertainers, authors, artists are delivering podcasts daily designed to give students across the country powerful learning experiences.
  5. Medical personnel are working countless hours to test and treat people who have or are at high risk of contracting COVID-19
  6. Many businesses are helping their employees continue to work productively and safely, both to keep the company active and to be able to keep paychecks flowing with as little disruption as possible.

These are all very robust examples of people operating at high levels of self-awareness, made obvious by their expressions of altruism, kindness, patience, wisdom, non-judgmentalism, win-win behaviors. These are wonderful examples we can all emulate in order to minimize the greatest degree possible the hardships this viral outbreak creates.

Of course, sadly, we witness daily those who would take advantage of this societal vulnerability for their personal gain or fearful people who hoard without consideration to their neighbors’ plight, or society’s need.

As we mentioned in our most recent blog, when we exhibit expressions of kindness, caring, helpfulness to others, our own well-being is enhanced, as well as those we help and even those who witness our kindness. We eliminate or lessen the anger, fear and frustration that accompanies the crisis we experience. We mitigate the disruption of the delivery of material goods and services that all people need ongoing.

Let’s celebrate those exceptional and kind folks for their service, as we emulate their example in every way we can. Let’s ignore the folks who prey on the weak, as we work to offset the negativity they bring to the situation. If possible, let’s help them see the good that results from us all shouldering the responsibility to contribute, knowing there may come a time where we are in that place of need, hoping other kind souls are there to lend critical aid.
This is a time of opportunity to exhibit our mettle, our strength, goodness and our humanity. This might be a time when you recognize that training in high self-awareness might be the very thing you need to give additional meaning to your life. The crisis this virus has created is very possibly going to create significant emotional and physical pain for quite a while to come. Your help can go a long way to impact for the better our country’s ability to move beyond it.
