If you ever want to gain clarity about your basic nature, why you are effective at times, and why you aren’t at other times, begin paying close attention to your behaviors. Our behaviors are the outward expression of our inner emotional and mental landscape. Research makes it abundantly clear that about 80% of our behavior is driven by what is in our unconscious. This is quite a startling revelation, isn’t it, that we have relatively little conscious awareness about why we do what we do.
Our beliefs, thoughts, and words combine to create our behaviors. Let’s look at truth of this. Think about how we react to this current coronavirus situation. Do we react with fear for our safety; are we frustrated that we must stay isolated in our home; are we angry at the incompetence of governmental response; do we worry about conflicting information from medical professionals about the danger of the virus? How do we behave when we have these feelings and thoughts?
Or do we have optimism that most of us will remain completely safe; do we think about how we can help or reassure our friends, neighbors, colleagues; do we consider what the positives are to be learned from this unfortunate situation; do we think about what we can do to make the situation as good as possible for everyone affected.
If we think and behave negatively, our decision-making, our health, and relationships are all affected negatively. If we think and behave positively, our creativity, our sense of well-being and our influence are all enhanced.
This is exactly why we “beat the drum” constantly about the importance of developing strong self-awareness. With strong self-awareness we understand our beliefs, values, feelings and perceptions, and manage them for greatest effectiveness and benefit. We also develop the ability to understand others well to interact most positively.
We see people every day who display traits of high self-awareness effectively navigating their lives and their interaction with others, benefiting society with their wisdom. We admire them and draw comfort from them. We also see people who sow discord and fear, act primarily for their own benefit, who either try and ignore the problems they encounter or take a “the sky is falling” attitude.
Which person do you want to be? Which type of person is most helpful for our communities and society?
We promote gaining abilities in self-aware behavior, for the simple reason that people will be happier, more productive, have better relationships and will enjoy a better understand of life and their place in it.
