We at Spirit of Eagles are gratified, for we know so many great people for whom life is unnecessarily frustrating.
The people of the United States, and the world in general are suffering through a change filled with turmoil and exasperation, politically, economically and socially. We are sure this will eventually resolve itself for the better, but our country faces some unpleasant challenges (as published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) holding us back as a nation and as individuals:
- The US has profound income inequality, a struggling middle class and one of the highest rates of child poverty among all developed countries. As a people we are frustrated.
- We have the highest cost of healthcare and education per person in the developed world, but with mediocre results. Quality of health care delivery and education outcomes in the US are among the lowest in developed countries.
- Our stress levels are “off the charts”, as spending on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs. (Xanax, Valium, Prozac, etc.) currently reaches $1 trillion annually.
- Our economic growth is lagging other developed nations. If our GDP growth had just matched other countries over the last 50 years, our GDP would today be $34 trillion annually, instead of our current $20 trillion. Why would we as a nation willingly forfeit $14 trillion of annual income. I don’t know the answer, but we have!
The United States is a great country and has been a world leader in many ways for much of our history. The United States has geographical, infrastructure, population demographics and financial advantages unmatched by any other nation. Why, then, are we struggling like this? We are better than this.
Isn’t it time, right now, to meet these challenges and turn it all around? Our course, Building Strong Self-awareness for Permanent, Positive Behavior Change is a first step. Let’s look at some organizations – and their people – that are using the principles that we include in our course to forge huge successes in the United States today.
Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, highlighted exceptional companies that truly exhibited greatness. The singular reason these few companies performed so exceptionally is… the leadership teams in each of these companies decided that they wanted to be great. Each of these companies outperformed their peer companies by 400% to 600% annually for 15 years.
Alan Mullaly, CEO of Ford Motor Company is another great example. Ford was losing $17 billion annually when he joined the company in 2006. Mullaly rebuilt the leadership team and transformed the entire organization from top to bottom. When he retired from Ford in 2014, the company’s profit had grown to $17 billion. An astonishing change in 9 years.
Jack Stack and his investors bought a small company, SRC, from the International Harvester bankruptcy in 1983. Using principles we espouse in our course Jack Stack and his employees grew the value of SRC by 18,000% in eleven years.
The companies highlighted by Jim Collins had leadership that chose to be great and had the determination to pull it off. Alan Mullaly and Jack Stack decided their companies would be great and that is what they built.
Extensive research shows that people with high emotional intelligence (self-awareness) respond more successfully to disruptive change. Gallop, Korn Ferry and other top consulting firms state that self-awareness is “The Critical Need” in business today. Research also shows, sadly, that only 15% of the U.S. population has strong self-awareness. The ability we need now to project major change effectively is the very ability we lack. Yet, we can overcome and transform our national challenge with work and determination. We have all the tools we need.
Wouldn’t it bring us far greater blessings of life if we were able to relate to colleagues, bosses and family with greater satisfaction, enjoyment and effectiveness? What if we simply “knew” how to best work with customers, colleagues and friends? How satisfying would it be to have real confidence in our decision-making ability all the time?
