For generations, the most important dreams of Americans have been health, wealth and happiness. That covers a lot of territory. What else do Americans desperately want? Along with the three we have mentioned, freedom to pursue our desires, start and run our own business, affordable housing and a secure retirement top the list.
We could conclude from this list that many people are having a hard time finding affordable housing and effectively building toward stable retirement, along with difficulty finding employment that is satisfying and meaningful.
As our economy recovers from this health crisis, more than 30 million Americans who found ourselves unemployed will be scrambling to fill fewer and lower-paying jobs in its aftermath. Unemployment will remain at higher levels for a while. Employers struggle as a reordering of the American workplace takes place.
- Who will get hired by the best companies?
- Who will be hired back to their old jobs?
- Who are going to get the best jobs, the jobs paying a living wage?
- Who will get the promotions, the raises, the bonuses?
- Who will have the greatest job security?
The best employees are those who are most skilled and productive, most responsible, most creative, most positive, most confident, healthiest, goal-oriented, build good relationships, best problem-solvers, best decision-makers, most cooperative, strong team players and natural leaders. These are the traits of people with highly developed self-awareness.
These are the people around which companies will build their success in the coming decades.
If life is about taking two steps forward and one step back, 2020 is definitely a step back. In the next several decades our financial security, our health and happiness will make great leaps forward. That is a certainty! For that to happen we will need to transition away from outmoded, unfair and unproductive ways we have been conducting our lives. We will figure that out as well.
Highly self-aware people are the ones who will lead the way in restructuring our economy, our society and cultural framework allowing for more of our population to more fully participate in the growth potential of our country. Employers with high ethical standards and caring attitudes toward their employees will stand at the forefront of our nation’s success moving forward.
